Skaneateles, NY--Ken Blanchard wants to turn traditional leadership on its head.
“Leadership is really the area I’m really excited about. I think the world is in desperate need for a new leadership model,” he told 80 people at a business luncheon at The Lodge at Welch Allyn in Skaneateles this morning.
Blanchard was invited to speak by the Manufacturers Association of Central New York, which has begun to offer training in Situational Leadership, a leadership method he developed in the 1960s.
Leadership is one of the great challenges currently facing business, said MACNY President Randall Wolken, in his remarks introducing Blanchard.
Blanchard is an author, speaker and business consultant. He is co-founder and chief spiritual officer of The Ken Blanchard Cos., in San Diego, California, and has a summer home on Skaneateles Lake.
He co-wrote "The One Minute Manager", among other books, and is trustee emeritus of Cornell University, where he earned his bachelor’s and doctorate.
The first part of leadership is being a servant, Blanchard said. “Leadership is not about you; it’s about the people you’re working with,” he said.
The second part is being a steward. “You don’t own anybody. All the people you have working for you are on loan to you,” Blanchard said.
And the last, is being a shepherd. “Everybody is important to you,” he said.
“It’s all about helping people win,” Blanchard said. “It’s based first on clear direction.
Now the manager works for their people.”
When the workers win, the customers win, the stockholders win and the community wins, he said.
