Syracuse, NY – The U.S. government would deploy 1,500 new border patrol agents and buy drone aircraft to patrol the border with Mexico under a $600 million emergency package being pushed by U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer.
Schumer has called a 10:15 a.m. news conference in downtown Syracuse to discuss the package.
The package responds to President Obama’s proposal in June to spend $600 million to bolster security along the border. The House has approved his request.
Schumer, chairman of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee, said the alternative plan the Senate passed last week would be funded by raising fees on foreign corporations that abuse U.S. visa programs to import workers from India. That would keep the program from adding to the federal budget deficit, he said.
The Senate bill passed the House on Tuesday with modifications that the Senate is expected to approve Thursday, a Schumer spokesman said.
