Van Buren, NY--The driver of a car that struck a tree in Van Buren Sunday night remains in critical condition this morning in Upstate University Hospital, while the conditions of the vehicle's three passengers has improved.
Robert D. Smallwood, 22, of 711 Van Buren Road, was airlifted from the scene of the crash on Village Boulevard North Sunday evening. He was driving a 1997 Subaru that was traveling southwest when it struck a tree on the east shoulder at 7:30 p.m. Smallwood remained in critical condition this morning, according to Upstate University Hospital.
The condition of passenger Alexis Trapp, 18, was upgraded from critical to fair condition this morning. Passenger Kelly M. Nolan, 21, was upgraded from serious to fair condition, and passenger Brandon M. Hare, 19, remains in fair condition.
