Fort Drum announced plans to start a courtesy patrol of clubs, restaurants and bars in the Watertown area to remind soldiers to be on their best behavior while out in the community. That story brought forth some memories of syracuse.com user Smash, who had this to say:
In the late 90's, Fort Drum did this same thing but kept the CP's on Post going from club to club there instead of off post. I had to do this duty a few times. You carry a radio direct to the MP's, and are in dress uniform. You aren't a cop, per se, just a presence. If an arrest has to be made on the spot, it can be done by any Officer or NCO, but its prefered that the MP's do that. Sometimes all a young soldier needs to see is the presence of a Senior NCO or Officer and their behavior changes without anyone getting arrested and careers being ruined. Its a great idea. I actually enjoyed those duties.
