Syracuse, NY -- More than 200 riders will compete in the Top Gun Shoot Out Snowmobile Grass Drags this weekend at the New York State Fairgrounds.
For the first time in three years, the event will be separate from the Syracuse Nationals and featured on the Fox Sports Net program “Inside Drag Racing” to be aired later this year.
Racers from Canada and seven different states will compete on the Moody Mile track, said Rob O’Connor, event director. Dan Hull, co-owner of A&S Racing which builds and races snowmobiles, traveled from Mason, Mich., in the hopes of setting a world record.
“We have the record for the wintertime on the ice, now we need to get it ... for the summertime on the dirt,” said Hull, 39, who has been racing snowmobiles for 18 years. Hull’s $25,000 snowmobile will be driven by Ian Hamilton, 24. The snowmobile is capable of exceeding 138 mph and took more than 200 hours to build.
Hamilton set world ice record at the World Series of Ice Chilly Fest in Port Huron, Mich., earlier this year, pushing the sled to 153 mph.
“You really can’t explain it,” said Hamilton, who has been racing for 11 years. “The adrenaline rush you get and everything from it.”
Last year more than 200 sleds competed and three world speed records were set.
