The date for Altmar residents to vote on dissolving their Oswego County village will be picked at a 7 p.m. Aug. 16 village board meeting. The board accepted a petition July 17 from residents requesting they be allowed to vote on the matter. Under state law, the date of the vote has to be set within a month of accepting the petition.
The vote must be scheduled for 60 to 90 days later; so, it could coincide with the general election, Nov. 2.. Altmar is in the town of Albion, and resident Bryan Myers said he presented the petition to the board July 7 because he believes village residents receive very little for the taxes they pay — there is no water, sewer, garbage or police service. The village owns the fire department, so there is concern about what would happen to it if the village no longer existed.
Of the 85 signatures on the petition, 74— or those of 31 percent of Altmar’s 239 registered voters — were accepted.
The Central New York village to most recently approve dissolution was Seneca Falls in Seneca County. It will be effective Dec. 31, 2011.
