ALBANY, N.Y. — A day after the Legislature passed one of the latest state budgets in New York history, Gov. David Paterson says the work isn’t done.

The lame duck Democrat says he’ll still push lawmakers for his property tax cap, which appears to have little chance in the Assembly.

He also cast more doubt on the “framework” lawmakers said they’d agreed to on Tuesday for dealing with a landmark proposal to give the public universities more autonomy. The announcement of the nonbinding guide for continued negotiations led at least one Democratic senator to flip his vote, finally allowing passage of the last budget bill.

Sen. William Stachowski of Buffalo had been holding out since June for approval of a plan to give the public universities more independence from Albany’s politics and budget problems.
