¦Alan Kozlowski, director of Cayuga County’s real property tax services office, and one of his employees, today were both arraigned on work-related criminal charges.
At the arraignment, Auburn City Judge Michael McKeon gave lawyers on both sides until Sept. 22 to file pre-trial motions. Assistant District Attorney Romolo Canzano said his office is ready to try the two cases, a court spokeswoman said.
Kozlowski, 62, of 4017 West Lake Road, Auburn, and Tammy M. Schramm, 36, of 2745 E. Brutus St., are each charged with two misdemeanor counts of receiving unlawful gratuities. Neither defendant entered a plea at the proceeding, the court official said.
If convicted, the two county employees could each be jailed up to a year and/or fined up to $1,000.
While at work on separate occasions in April, Kozlowski and Schramm are accused of running a scheme that enabled Schramm to receive a small amount of money for helping an unnamed assessor enter property tax-related data into their office computers while they were on the job, according to sheriff’s investigators.
Kozlowski did not receive any money, investigators said, and the assessor was not charged.
Kozlowski, who was appointed director nearly 12 years ago, and Schramm, a county employee since late 2002, were both suspended with pay after their arrests. Kozlowski’s salary is $59,956 a year and Schramm is paid $39,804 yearly.
