Rome, NY — State police say two people aboard a single-engine plane are being treated for minor injuries after the aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from a small airport in Central New York.
Trooper Jack Keller says the 1985 Piper went down around 9 a.m. Tuesday, just minutes after departing Becks Grove Airport outside the city of Rome, 35 miles east of Syracuse.
He says the engine stalled and the plane nose-dived into trees along a road, taking down power lines near an intersection.
Keller says the pilot, 55-year-old Daniel Kelly of Sherrill, has a broken leg, while 64-year-old Timothy McCormick of Marcy suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to Oneida Hospital.
Becks Grove is a private, two-runway airstrip 8 miles west of Rome.
The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the cause of the crash.
