Syracuse, NY - The former treasurer of the Brewerton Fire Department pleaded guilty today to stealing more than $3,000 from the department two years ago.
Maria Baxter, 35, of 5586 Kathan Road, Brewerton, pleaded guilty before Onondaga County Judge William Walsh to a single felony count of fourth-degree grand larceny.
She admitted stealing $3,435 from the fire department in January and February 2008.
Assistant District Attorney Mary Gorman said Baxter took three checks from the department’s general fund and hall-rental account, made them out to cash and cashed them for herself.
Baxter was originally charged with a more serious count of third-degree grand larceny when arrested in April.
In exchange for her guilty plea to the lesser larceny count, Baxter is to be sentenced to five years’ probation and ordered to pay restitution.
Sentencing is Oct. 13.
