Homeowners weren't injured (video). Driver will face DWI charge.
Camillus, NY -- A Camillus couple had a rude awakening this morning when a pick-up truck went airborne and smashed through their bedroom.
“We got up when we flew across the room,” said Carolyn Coyne of 3543 Warners Road. “Thank God it tossed us across the room.”
The crash occurred at 3:53 a.m. when a green pick-up truck traveling north on Hinsdale Road failed to stop for the sign at the Warners Road intersection, said Onondaga County Sheriff’s deputies.
The driver of the truck, Michael Whyte, 54, of 27 Wallace Ave., Auburn will face charges of driving while intoxicated, passing a stop sign and imprudent speed.
The 1996 Ford Ranger carrying Whyte and a passenger went up a small hill, and then went airborne before it hit the well-kept white house with red trim.
It hit the bedroom wall where Carolyn and Ken Coyne, both 48, have the headboard for their bed. The couple has owned the house for a year and was married on Friday, Carolyn Coyne said as she watched a tow truck pull the now roofless and doorless pick-up truck from the side of the house.
Whyte and passenger, Keith Ferrin, 52, also of 27 Wallace Ave., Auburn were taken to Upstate University Hospital by WAVES and Rural Metro Ambulance. They have non-life threatening injuries, deputies said.
The Coynes were not injured.
“I could never have imagined this,” Carolyn Coyne said. “We’ve got six pine trees and a hill. How fast was he going?”
The accident is still under investigation.
