Students from a dozen Syracuse elementary schools – an estimated 1,800 or so kids - flowed into Thornden Park today to spend the day showing off what they accomplished in a summer school program sponsored by Say Yes to Education and the city school district.Big tents with displays of the student work were set up near the pool and students performed on two stages. Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner showed up to congratulate students on their work and said she wished she were wearing a “Say Yes” T-shirt. Each school had its own color.
“You make us all very proud to be members of this community,” Miner told the crowd.
Say Yes is a nonprofit foundation working with the district and Syracuse University, among other partners, to increase the number of city students who graduate from college. The “summer camp” program of activities and academics took place this month in elementary schools on the city’s south and west sides.
