Syracuse, NY -- A Fulton man accused of stealing a purse from a vehicle in Clay led police in a car chase Tuesday night that ended with the man crashing his car in Syracuse before continuing the chase on foot, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Douglas J. Stoughtenger, 48, of 403 Broadwell Ave., was taken into custody in Syracuse by a deputy and a city police officer. Stoughtenger was charged with fleeing a police officer, resisting arrest, and petit larceny, all misdemeanors, and reckless driving and several other vehicle and traffic violations.

Sgt. John D’Eredita gives these details:

About 9:30 p.m., a woman paying at the Fastrac Market, 8467 Oswego Road, Clay, was returning to her car at the gas station in time to see a man run from her car with her purse. The man got into a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix and drove off.

After 911 was called, a Baldwinsville police officer spotted the suspect’s car and attempted to pull him over. Instead of pulling over, the car went onto Interstate 690 and drove east.

The county’s Air One helicopter joined the chase and coordinated the units involved. The car left I-690 at Bear Street in Syracuse and the chase went through parts of the city.

During the chase, Stoughtenger threw some of the property out of the car as he drove.

The car struck a van at Burnet Avenue and Catherine Street, which caused the car to crash into the I-690 bridge over Catherine Street.

After the crash, Stoutenger got out of the car and ran before a deputy and a city police officer took him into custody.
