Syracuse, NY -- A Syracuse man is in jail and a Syracuse police cruiser is in the shop after a chase Tuesday afternoon.

Around 12:25 p.m. police spotted a 2005 silver Hyundai Elantra in the 300 block of Catherine Street. The car had been reported stolen about 45 minutes earlier, Syracuse police said.

Police pulled the car over. The driver of the stolen car, who police identified as Robin Guthridge, 23, of 306 Shuart St., stepped out of the car. When the police officer stepped out of the cruiser, Guthridge got back in the Hyundai and drove off.

Police followed Guthridge east on Hawley Avenue, through several turns, east onto James Street – where Guthridge struck another causing light damage to the other car, but no injuries – then onto Shuart Street before Guthridge lost control the car and struck a retaining wall at 312 Wilson St.

Guthridge got out of the car again and fled on foot before police captured him in the 300 block of Shuart Street.

A police cruiser involved in the chase struck a light pole at the intersection of Vine Street and James Street, causing minor damage to the cruiser.

Guthridge is charged with unlawful fleeing in the second degree and grand larceny in the fourth degree, both felonies. He is also charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in the third degree, reckless operation and resisting arrest, all misdemeanors. He was also ticketed for leaving the scene of a property damage accident, failure to comply, unlicensed operation and several other traffic infractions, police said.

He was taken to the county Justice Center and will be arraigned Wednesday.
