DeWitt, NY -- A fire forced the evacuation during the lunch hour of a building on the Carrier Corp. campus near Carrier Circle.
A fire on the roof of building TR4 was called into Onondaga County 911 at 12:34 p.m. for the building off of Route 298. The building houses offices, engineering labs and a cafeteria, said Carrier spokesman Jon Shaw. A DeWitt police officer described the building as being built during World War II.
Outside contractors doing work on the roof apparently caused the fire, Shaw said. Smoke was seen coming from an equipment room sparked the evacuation, Shaw said. East Syracuse firefighters, with help from DeWitt and Mattydale, put the fire out and no one was injured.
The power to the building is out and no employees will be allowed back into the building until power is restored and the damage is assessed, Shaw said.
