DeWitt, NY -- Sensis Corp., for years one of the fastest-growing companies in Central New York, said today it will lay off 84 people over the next few days as it responds to shifts in the global aviation and defense markets.

“Taking these difficult actions now will allow Sensis to maintain its position as a competitive, market-driven company,” Beth Larson, the company’s director of communications, said in an e-mail.

The company said the layoffs are a permanent “reduction in force.” Sixteen of the 84 employees whose jobs are being eliminated have accepted voluntary separation packages. The others will be given severance payments. Larson said she could not disclose details of the severance packages.

Sensis employed approximately 730 people, most at its headquarters on Collamer Crossings in DeWitt and at an office on Enterprise Parkway in DeWitt, prior to the layoffs. It will have about 646 employees following the reductions.

The company is a global provider of air defense, air traffic control, airline and airport operations management, and data integration and distribution.

Larson said the reduction in personnel is a result of changing staffing needs caused by market shifts toward customizable, off-the-shelf products.

The only previous layoffs at Sensis occurred in 2006, when the company discontinued a healthcare-related business venture and laid off 10 people.
