Son Frank Jr., 19, stabbed Thursday while breaking up fight in front of Seals Community Center at Kirk Park.
Syracuse, NY - Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said he was “concerned first and disturbed second” when he heard his son had been stabbed Thursday afternoon.
Frank Fowler Jr., 19, was slashed on the arm with a razor blade about 3 p.m. when he tried to break up a fight in front of the Seals Community Center at Kirk Park, where he is a staff member.
The police chief talked briefly this morning with a reporter shortly before taking part in a military ceremony at the Onondaga County War Memorial.
Fowler said he went to the scene of the stabbing before heading to the hospital to be with his son, who received stitches.
The chief said that he would not recommend a civilian try to stop a fight. However, the chief said, it is part of human nature to want to get involved.
“It was something that occurred in front of him and he thought he could safely intervene,” Fowler said.
Was it the right thing to do?
“My answer is yes. He did the right thing under the circumstances,” Fowler said.
Kirk Park is safe, both Fowler and city parks Commissioner Pat Driscoll said. Driscoll said he didn’t think any children at the center were endangered by the fight Frank Fowler Jr. attempted to stop.
“We’re very proud of Frank Jr.,” Driscoll said.
Frank Fowler Jr. acted appropriately in his attempt to break up the fight, Driscoll said.
“He did the right thing,” Driscoll said.
Frank Fowler Jr. was scheduled to be at work today, Driscoll said.
The two involved in the fight ran from the scene and the police investigation is continuing. Fowler Jr. did not know the two.
