Syracuse, NY -- Syracuse police took a gun from a bicyclist early Monday morning and the bicyclist is facing two felonies, police said.
Anthony Candelavia, 19, of 2 Centennial Drive, was riding a bicycle against traffic just after midnight in the 100 block of Dudley Street with no light on his bicycle, police said.
When an officer tried to pull Candelavia over, Candelavia instead pedaled off, forcing the officer to cut Candelavia off with his patrol car, police said.
As Candelavia pedaled, the officer saw him make a grab toward his waistband, police said. The officer gave Candelavia a quick pat-down and noticed a large object stuck in the waistband, police said.
The officer pushed Candelavia down on the hood of his car and held him at gunpoint until other units arrived. Police then lifted Candelavia’s shirt and pulled out a semi-automatic pistol, police said.
Candelavia was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property, both felonies, plus failure to keep right, inadequate lights and no bell or signaling device on a bicycle, all violations.
