Syracuse, NY -- Two women got another reason to quit smoking Monday night when the fire escape on which they were sitting broke away from the wall to which it was attached.

Firefighters were called to 939 North Salina St. shortly before 11:30. They found the women trapped on the fire escape which tilted across an alley, resting on the building next door.

Syracuse District Fire Chief Collin Coogan said the two women had gone out to smoke and were sitting when lag bolts at the top of the fire escape broke off from the brick building, tipping the platform on which the woman had been sitting. The fire escape did not fall to the ground.

Firefighters put harnesses on the women and pulled them through a door, back into the building.

No one was hurt, Coogan said.

Officials were trying to contact the building's landlord.
