Syracuse, NY-- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has named Syracuse as one of the most vegetarian and vegan-friendly cities in North America.

Syracuse came in fifth among small cities in the survey.

The organization divided the survey of U.S. and Canadian cities into two categories; those with a population of 300,000 or more, and those with less. PETA then looked at the number of vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly restaurants per capita. It also asked PETA supports and staff members about the quality of the options.

“Syracuse residents should be proud that their hometown is on the cutting edge of health cuisine that is earth and animal friendly,” said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman.

The organization noted local restaurants Strong Hearts Cafe, Alto Cinco and Sparky Town.

Olympia, Wash., came in first among small cities, followed by Burlington, Vt. Rounding out the top 10 were Iowa City, Iowa; Bloomington, Ind.; Topeka, Kan,; Worcester, Mass.; Lincoln, Neb.; Providence, RI; and Boise, Idaho.

Washington, D.C., came in first in the big-city category.

The mayor and tourism bureau in each city ranked in the top 10 will receive a certificate and letter of congratulations.
