Curriculum proposal has sparked outrage among parents in a Montana school district.
Parents in Helena, Montana, are divided over a proposed sex education curriculum.
The plan begins in kindergarten, teaching children anatomical terms. Curriculum in first grade includes lessons on gay sex; fifth graders would learn about the various ways people have intercourse; and high schoolers would study erotic art.
Supporters say the curriculum contains honest, science-based information that would help the students make better decisions.
“To bury our heads in the sand is to fail our children,” Helena resident Shahid Haque-Hausrath told the Independent Record. “This is about reality and truth so our kids don’t grow up in La-La Land, and have sufficient knowledge to make informed decisions,” added Mary Ann Dunwell.
But many of the parents who packed a school board meeting on Tuesday night urged members to take another look at the sex education program.
"They even teach about anxiety about sexual performance in high school," parent Mikal Wilkerson told the Associated Press.
The school board plans to take up the issue again next month. Meanwhile in Massachusetts, The Provincetown School Committee is standing by a controversial plan to offer condoms to students in all grade levels.
