SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Justice Department has settled a lawsuit against the state of New York and its public university system for failing to provide on-campus voter registration services for students with disabilities.

Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, says Wednesday that a court-approved agreement ensures that college students with disabilities will be able to register as conveniently as possible.

The lawsuit filed in 2004 in the U.S. District Court in Syracuse claimed that the state violated the National Voter Registration Act.

Under the agreement, disability services offices at each public university and college campus in the state will provide registration services by the start of the 2010-2011 school year.
