Syracuse, NY -- Police charged a Syracuse man with attempted murder, saying he stabbed his ex-wife approximately 31 times early this morning as she slept in her bed.
The victim, Kathryn Jayson, 44, is in serious condition at Upstate University Hospital.
Guy Jayson, 46, of 126 Fairview Ave., was charged today with attempted murder, burglary, aggravated criminal contempt and criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies, and possession of burglary tools, a misdemeanor.
Jayson is accused of cutting a screen about 3:30 a.m. and climbing through the bedroom window of ex-wife Kathryn Jayson's second-floor apartment at 606 Winton St.
Guy Jayson then began stabbing his ex-wife in the bed, police said. Kathryn Jayson began screaming, which woke up a daughter that was sleeping in an adjoining bed, police said.
Guy Jayson told the daughter to call 911 because he had just killed her mother, police said. As Guy Jayson ran out the front door of the apartment, the daughter called 911 to report the stabbing, police said.
Guy Jayson is believed to have used a hunting knife in the attack, but police have not recovered the weapon, Sgt. Tom Connellan said.
Both the daughter and Kathryn Jayson identified Guy Jayson as the assailant. Kathryn Jayson's 3-year-old grandson was inside the apartment during the attack. Police are not identifying the daughter other than to say she is the daughter of Guy and Kathryn Jayson.
Jayson is expected to survive her wounds, Connellan said.
Kathryn Jayson received an order of protection against Guy Jayson from Family Court in March, police said.
During the morning, detectives attempted to find Guy Jayson, who had been in phone contact with police but refused to turn himself in, police said.
Detectives received a tip that Guy Jayson was in the area of Winton Street and Hawley Avenue and spotted him about 10:40 a.m. leaving a wooded area. Jayson got into a car and drove off and police stopped the car at the Canal and North Beech streets.
Jayson is being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center and is expected to be arraigned Saturday morning. Police have not released a photo of the suspect.
