Syracuse, NY -- A Syracuse man watching his stepchildren Monday night broke his stepson’s leg for no apparent reason, Syracuse police said today.

Luis Arce, 34, of 325 Tully St., was watching the Yankees game on television about 8 p.m. while his 5-year-old stepson was asleep in the bedroom, Sgt. Tom Connellan said. Arce got up to go to the bedroom and stuck his head in the boy’s room.

Arce then went into the room at around 9 p.m., twisted the sleeping boy’s leg and gave the boy a spiral fracture, Connellan said. The boy's mother was at work at the time. When she returned home the boy complained of pain, Connellan said.

On Tuesday, Arce came home from work and told his wife what he had done, Connellan said. She then took her son to the hospital. Police were notified by a social worker at Crouse Hospital, he said.

Witnesses and Arce himself, when asked by detectives, could not explain why he did it, Connellan said.

"He couldn’t give an explanation," Connellan said.

Arce was charged with assault, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
