Cortland, NY -- The wife of a State University College at Cortland sports professor has been charged with tampering with evidence in her husband's sex-abuse case, state police said.
Jane DePerno was charged with felony tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution, as well as misdemeanor conspiracy, said Investigator Tom Roberts. She is expected to return to court later this month, after being released on her own recognizance.
She was charged after her husband, Daniel DePerno, was arrested in late April on sex charges relating to a teenage girl, Roberts said. She was arraigned on June 15.
Daniel DePerno was charged with 12 counts of sexual abuse, two counts of criminal sexual act and one count of second-degree rape, troopers said. He is accused of these crimes when the girl was under the age of 15.
He is also charged with 15 counts of third-degree rape, accused of having sex with the girl when she was younger than 17, troopers said.
Officials from SUNY Cortland could not immediately be reached for comment on his current status with the university.
DePerno is a professor in the sport management department and the director of the college's Sport Media & Technology Learning Center, according to a profile on the college's website.
