A little relief comes Friday with likely rain and highs in the upper 80s.

Syracuse, NY -- A heat advisory will remain in effect through 7 p.m. across Onondaga, Madison and southern Oneida counties as temperatures in the 90s and high humidity will combine to push the National Weather Service’s heat index over 100, the weather service says.

The chance of heat illnesses rises with the heat index, the weather service warns. Today’s predicted highs in the mid-90s and accompanying mugginess will make it seem like it’s somewhere between 100 and 103, forecasters say.

“This will be the fourth day in a row with temperatures over 90,” said Priscilla Nicosia, a forecaster with the weather service office in Binghamton. Syracuse hasn’t seen that extensive a heat wave since 2005 when the thermometer topped 90 each day between June 25 and 28, she said.

The minimum relative humidity of 45 percent means the atmosphere will be nearly half saturated with water, Nicosia said. “That’s pretty high for the middle of the afternoon,” she said.

To avoid heat illness, drink lots of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms and keep out of the sun, the weather service advises. Don’t forget to check up on relatives and neighbors, and make sure pets are sheltered from the heat and have plenty of water.

The forecast turns from hellish to merely heckish Friday as a cold front that is expected to move through the region brings a 70 percent chance of rain and highs in the upper 80s.

Showers are likely Saturday along with cooler temperatures with highs reaching the upper 70s.

Beach weather is predicted to return Sunday with sunny skies and highs in the lower 80s.
