Syracuse, NY – A stiflingly hot and muggy air mass will remain parked over Central New York today, extending the heat wave that took root Sunday, but the forecast also contains some omens of relief.

High temperatures this afternoon again are expected to top off in the low to mid 90s and high humidity is going to make it feel closer to 100, the National Weather Service says.

Still, the heat index has to cross 100 before the weather service will issue a heat advisory. Forecasters as of 6:10 a.m. said they were holding off on issuing one, but may do so later on if that combination of heat and humidity, the heat index, goes high enough.

Meanwhile, an air quality advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. as elevated levels of ozone accompany the heat wave.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation, which issued the alert, recommends limiting strenuous outdoor activity to lower the chances of suffering negative effects from the pollutant. The very young and people with respiratory problems such as asthma and heart disease are especially vulnerable, the department warns.

Thursday should be the last day the region will be subjected to Mother Nature’s blast furnace, with the heat index again approaching 100, the weather service says. A cold front is expected to cross Central New York on Friday, bringing highs in the upper 80s and a chance of showers or thunderstorms. Expect highs in the lower 80s Saturday and Sunday, the weather service says.
