Altmar, NY -- Heavy rain and emergency river operations on the Salmon River in Oswego County has results in higher than normal water flow from the dam in Altmar to Lake Ontario.

Everyone is urged to refrain from recreational use in or near that area of the river until further notice.

The county Emergency Management Office said officials at Brookfield Renewable Power, which operates hydro stations on the Salmon River, said overnight rain caused higher than normal levels on the reservoir at Bennetts Bridge. To alleviate this, at 1 p.m. Brookfield released excess water from the dam.

People should take great caution in the area from the dam in Altmar upstream of the DEC Fish Hatchery through Pulaski to Lake Ontario.
